Moon

At new moon, the Moon can pass between the Sun and Earth. Only a node crossing makes its shadow touch Earth.

The lighter outer shadow reaches a wider area where only part of the Sun is blocked.

Why not every month?

The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5.1°. An eclipse needs new or full moon near a node, where the two orbital planes cross.

At totality, the sky darkens and the Sun's faint corona appears around the Moon. Just before or after totality, one bright point creates the diamond-ring effect.

Why eclipses come in pairs

Eclipses only happen when the new or full Moon lines up with the plane of Earth's orbit, which occurs during two "eclipse seasons" about six months apart. That is why a solar eclipse is usually followed (or preceded) by a lunar eclipse two weeks later, as with the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 and the partial lunar eclipse of August 28, 2026.

Why local times differ from the headline time

A lunar eclipse is the easy case: the Moon enters Earth's shadow at one instant, and everyone who can see the Moon at that instant sees the same phase at the same moment. The only local question is whether the Moon is above your horizon, which the finder above answers for the place you choose.

A solar eclipse is different. The Moon's shadow sweeps across Earth, so first contact, maximum, and last contact all happen at different clock times a few hundred kilometres apart, and the fraction of the Sun covered changes with them. Those times cannot be guessed from the greatest-eclipse instant. The finder solves them for your coordinates from the Besselian elements NASA publishes for each individual eclipse.
