Earth's lighter outer shadow surrounds the umbra and gently dims the Moon first.
The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5.1°. An eclipse needs new or full moon near a node, where the two orbital planes cross.
Only part of the Moon enters Earth's umbra. A dark curved bite appears, but the whole lunar disc never turns red in totality.

Part of the full Moon slides into Earth's umbral shadow, so a dark bite grows and then recedes across the lunar disc. Visible wherever the Moon is up across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Safe to watch with the naked eye.
